Starred Items

Starring lets you bookmark messages and channels for personal quick access. Unlike pins (which are visible to the entire channel), starred items are private to you. They act as a personal shortlist of things you want to come back to.

Star a message

  1. Hover over the message you want to star.
  2. Click the star icon in the action toolbar, or open the three-dot menu and select Star Message.
  3. The star icon fills in to indicate the message is starred.

Starred messages are saved to your personal starred items list regardless of which channel they are in.

TIP

Use stars to bookmark messages you need to act on later — tasks mentioned in chat, links you want to review, or questions you need to follow up on.

Star a channel

You can also star entire channels to pin them to the top of your sidebar:

  1. Right-click the channel name in the sidebar.
  2. Select Star Channel.
  3. The channel moves to a Starred section at the top of your channel list.

Starred channels are always visible and easy to access, even if they are buried in a long channel list.

Star from channel settings

  1. Open the channel.
  2. Click the channel name in the header to open settings.
  3. Click the Star toggle.

Access starred items

Starred messages

  3. The starred items panel opens, showing all your starred messages across all channels and DMs.

Each starred message entry shows:

Jump to messageLink to navigate to the message in its channel

Click Jump to message to scroll to the starred message in its original context.

Starred channels

Starred channels appear in a dedicated Starred section at the top of the channel sidebar. This section is always visible when you have at least one starred channel.

Unstar items

Unstar a message

There are two ways:

  • From the message: Hover over the starred message in the channel and click the filled star icon to unstar it.
  • From the starred panel: Open the starred items panel, find the message, and click the Unstar button.

Unstar a channel

  • Right-click the channel in the sidebar and select Unstar Channel.
  • Or open the channel settings and toggle off the star.

The channel moves back to the regular channel list.

Stars vs pins

Stars and pins serve different purposes:

AspectStarsPins
VisibilityPrivate (only you see your stars)Public (all channel members see pins)
ScopeCross-channel (your stars span all channels)Per-channel (each channel has its own pins)
PurposePersonal bookmarks and remindersShared reference material for the team
LimitNo limit50 per channel
Available onMessages and channelsMessages only (in channels only)

TIP

Use stars for personal tracking and pins for team-wide reference. If a message is important for everyone, pin it. If it is important only for you, star it.

Use cases for starring

Personal task tracking

Star messages that contain action items for you. Review your starred items at the end of the day to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Research and reference

When gathering information across multiple channels — design feedback, technical requirements, customer quotes — star relevant messages. Your starred items panel becomes a curated collection of reference material.

Prioritize channels

Star your most important channels (team channel, project channel, direct report conversations) so they always appear at the top of the sidebar, even when you belong to dozens of channels.

Follow up reminders

Star messages that you cannot respond to immediately. Come back to the starred items panel when you have time to address them.

When someone shares a useful link in chat, star the message so you can find it later without searching through channel history.

Managing starred items

Review regularly

Starred items are most useful when the list is kept fresh. Periodically review your starred items and unstar anything you have already addressed or that is no longer relevant.

No folders or categories

Starred items are displayed in a single flat list sorted by when you starred them (most recent first). There are no folders, tags, or categories. If you need more structured organization, consider creating a personal page in SetGet Pages to track items.

Starred items persist

Starred items are saved to your account and persist across sessions and devices. If you star a message on your laptop, it appears in your starred items on any device where you sign in.
